Jock McFadyen 1950

Summary

View looking down off a skyscraper, down onto the streets below, bits of rubbish are flying in the wind. The buildings are shades of blue in the night, punctuated by yellow loghts in the streets down below. Jock McFadyen is a keen and witty observer of urban life. He works quickly and spontaneously, mixing real observation with invention. Like other people on visits to New York, McFadyen went up the Empire State Building which he says "is etched into the tourist psyche". The thrill of this exhilarating experience is conveyed in this expressive painting. It includes his actual admission ticket which floats carelessly above the giddy view.
