Bodhisattva, Guanyin Made in China 1850-1900 Wood, carved and painted Guanyin is the Chinese goddess of mercy. She is worshipped as a compassionate goddess who rescues people from danger and misery and is regarded as the patron saint of motherhood. She is often depicted with a number of emblems, including the lotus flower and ambrosia bottle. Sometimes she is shown holding a child in her arms, probably influenced by Virgin and Child figures. This particular representation of Guanyin shows her in a very relaxed and serene position, with her legs crossed in an attitude of meditation; a perfect example for contemplation and inspiration.
