Britannia's Anchor (on the River Dart)

David Murray 1849 - 1933

Summary

A crepuscular view of the Britannia, on the River Dart at low tide. In the foreground to left the shore is littered with seaweed and a tall wooden post stands in the wet sand, parallel to the ship's mast. At the foot of the post and again further away in the middleground, a trio of herons are just visible. On the opposite bank sits the Britannia, a large black and white vessel with its sails furled. At the foot of the dark hills beyond, small boat yards and buildings can be seen to the left of the ship. The sky is darkened and heavy.
