A Village Woman

Sir George Clausen 1852 - 1944

Summary

A head-and-shoulders portrait of a village woman, with her dark hair pulled back, and her head turned slightly to the right. She is haloed by an autumnal, leafy background, and her purple dress is textured and thickly painted. The model was Mrs Clara Wilson, of the village of Widdington in Essex. Clausen lived at Widdington 1890-1904, and Mrs Wilson modelled for him several times.
