Essex Landscape

Harold Percy Steggles 08/02/1911 - 1971

Summary

View across rolling Essex countryside, with open five-barred gate in foreground to the left and fence posts to the right, beyond which is an old felled tree trunk. Gentle hills extend in the distance in light green against a bright, open sky. The reverse of the canvas is painted with a partial interior view through a window onto a bare, winter tree trunk. Both paintings are sparce in nature, representing the bold character of the Essex countryside and the harsh weather that sometimes occupies these territories. Colours used a naturalistic if somewhat flattened and muted in tone.
