Interior
Summary
Modernist studio interior. A glass topped table and stool have been placed against a plain wall with a single vase of flowers on a shelf behind. A window through which railings can be seen, is visible to the right, casting light against the back wall. A rug decorated with a simple geometric pattern has been placed on the wooden floorboards to the left of the composition. Interior is a painting of the London interior design studio of Francis Bacon who began his career in 1928 designing domestic interiors, modern furniture and rugs. The ordered room displays examples of his chrome and glass furniture designs and geometric patterned rugs. An article in the interiors magazine,The Studio, from August 1930 described his designs as 'The 1930s Look in British Decoration'. In November 1930, Bacon held an exhibition at his Queensbury Mews West studio along with artist Jean Shepeard and Roy de Maistre, an Australian artist and designer who had immigrated to London. De Maistre helped Bacon secure important furniture commissions. Shortly after this painting was completed, Bacon abandoned interior design for a career as a full-time painter.
