The Little Bride

The Little Bride

Ethel Leontine Gabain 1883 - 1950

Summary

Three-quarter length portrait of a young woman in a wedding dress, sitting angled slightly to the right. Her head is also turned to the right, in a contemplative fashion, and both her hands clasp a bouquet of flowers in her lap. She wears a long transparent veil flowing over both shoulders. The portrait is coloured with light blue, white and some yellow tones. Behind the figure decorative patterns are visible resembling bunches of grapes, perhaps suggesting a cloth backdrop or mural. The artist's model for The Little Bride was Carmen Watson, who sat for Gabain and other artists on many occasions.
