Summary

This is a rustic scene of a group of cottages seen through leafless, wintry trees. There is a woodpile in the left foreground behind the nearest cottage. In front of the woodpile a man stands with a raised armand an axe, chopping wood. The brown and green colours of the ground are warmer than that of the sky, which fades from blue closer to the horizon, to grey at the top of the painting.
