Early Morning, Poole Harbour

James Patchell Chettle 1871 - 1944

Summary

Calm sea view of Poole Harbour from the shore, with rowing boats and sailing dinghies dotted about the harbour, with hills extending horizontally in the background, behind these other hills are seen extending further into the background, painted in lighter colours to represent this. The hills are depicted in a flat charcoal grey with exposed white sections, the sea (which occupies roughly half the image) is depicted in a very light blue with green tones, horizontal varied textural and tonal lines represent the ripple of the water. The sky is blue underneath with a creamy yellow and brown layer painted over the top, perhaps indicating a cloudy sky. The rowing boats are all yellow in tone apart from a single black boat. The paintwork is layered and textured (reminiscent of collage) and contributes towards this painting being fairly abstract.
