A Cornish Creek

Hurst Balmford 1871 - c.1950

Summary

Rural landscape scene depicting a winding creek in Watergate, Cornwall. A narrow lane runs towards a hamlet of cottages with smoking chimneys and a small child walks in the direction of the viewer. Between the dwellings a man is visible in the background, walking into the distance. To the right of the composition, a creek winds through the landscape, upon which a small rowing boat with two figures can be seen; one figure sits in the boat while the other pushes the vessel and its passenger into the water from the river bank. The scene is surrounded by lush grassland and trees; in the distance beyond the cottages, hills line the horizon.
