Winter Scene, Sweden 1913 William Ratcliffe 1870 - 1955 Oil on Canvas William Ratcliffe grew up in Manchester, moving to Letchworth Garden City in around 1906. Ratcliffe's Letchworth neighbours were the Parkers: Stanley, a designer, and his Swedish wife, Signe. When they visited Sweden in 1913, Ratcliffe went too. They stayed for six months at the Sundsholm estate, a manor house and farm in the south of the country. This painting is almost certainly of the farm at Sandsholm. Ratcliffe painted pictures of the farm in different seasons, often in pinks and blues, inspired by the northern lights. Gift of Eric C Gregory 1946.44
