Summary

Everyday scene depicting a cattle market in Brittany. To the left of the painting, cattle dealers discuss business related matters with families in the market square. A herd of cows are gathered behind the dealer, preoccupied with grazing. Within the herd a cattle herder is just visible, holding a long whip. The cattle dealer holds out his hands in a persuasive gesture, whereas in contrast the mother stands with clasped hands, seemingly reluctant to make a purchase. The scene is one of activity including a man holding a sack exiting the large cottage in the background, a group of three horses gathered in the vicinity, as well as groups of people gathered around the square. Certain items of period dress are worn including pantaloons. There are cream-coloured stone cottages in the background with thatched roofs, the sky is pale grey but nevertheless illuminates the preceedings with a strong light.
