The Green Fence, Hulme

Harry Kingsley 1914 - 1998

Summary

A simplistically but naturalistically painted derelict warehouse, in the midst of an industrial Hulme landscape. The roof has collapsed, revealing bare wooden supporting beams; the building is surrounded by high green fencing, topped with barbed wire. In front of the fence a man stands with a wheelbarrow piled high with clothes and bags, accompanied by a young boy playing on a home-made cart. In a letter to the Gallery in the Artist's File, Kingsley refers to the location as "...a scene sited beneath the Mancunian Way".
