Summary

Thomas Egerton, 2nd Earl of Wilton (1799-1882), was known as Thomas Grosvenor until he succeeded to the earldom in 1814 at the age of fourteen. In 1821, when he was twenty-one, he assumed the surname Egerton and inherited Heaton Park in Manchester, whose grounds included Heaton Hall, a fine Palladian country house designed and built by James Wyatt in 1772. The artist, Henry Fleuss, was born in Kaiserwerth, Düsseldorf, and came to England around 1830, where he taught drawing and painting at Marlborough College between 1844 and 1856.
