View in the Campagna, Rome (with ruins)

Edward Lear 1812 - 1888

Summary

An expansive landscape scene, depicting the Campagna in Rome. On the left in the foreground red and brown coloured Roman ruins can be seen, and to the right, a shepherd herds his sheep. In the distance, rows of stone columns line the horizon at the foot of a dramatic mountain range. The colours are in earth tones of brown and yellow, with a cream and very light brown sky. Edward Lear left England in July 1837 to make the long journey to Rome where he arrived early December and remained for ten years.
