The Chandelier

The Chandelier

John Monks 1954

Summary

A mirror hangs on the wall in a delapidated building seen through two doorframes. A chandelier is reflected in the mirror as well as numerous other scraps, timber, and a female figure shape with a full, red skirt. To the extremities of the painting red drapes hang from ceiling to floor. Impasto and collage are used to build up texture around the doorframes, especially at the base of the painting. The colours of the painting suggest this was once a grand interior with gilted gold frames and luxurious red drapery, however these colours are now muted and faded.
