Cave

Prunella Clough 1919 - 1999

Summary

This is an abstract composition of three shapes against a dark blue background, which varies in shades and bears imprints in places. Descending from the top to the centre of the work are three symmetrical areas of a paler hue decreasing in size, which are blue and yellow striped. There are cracks painted across lower right corner. Cave exemplifies Prunella Clough's subtle, individual vision in which the figurative and abstract merge into one. Three strange forms, sweet and synthetically coloured, hover before a delicate and smoky grey haze of netting. Their nature and meaning are ambiguous, but they may suggest the relentless invasion of non-organic material into our natural world.
