Summary

Outdoors scene with a pear tree at the centre. A skeletal figure representing Death reaches from the branches of the tree and offers a pear to an elderly male figure stood to the left looking up at the tree with an expression of surprise. “La Légende du Bonhomme Misère” (aka “Death in the Pear Tree”), c1869, plate 13, illustration for “Bonhomme Misère” published in France by Alfred Cadart (1828–75) in “L'Eau Forte” (1874).
