Clara at the Tomb of Eloisa

John Hoppner (after) 1758 - 1810

Summary

This is probably a portrait of the painter, John Hoppner's wife. She was the daughter of Mrs Wright of Pall Mall, who was a modeller of portraits in wax and a woman of great talent. Hoppner, the painter, was frequently a guest there and, in 1782, he married her daughter of whom he painted several portraits. The theme of this print is taken from a novel by Rousseau.
