Summary
Portrait of a lady wearing a powdered wig and a white gown tied in at the waist with a yelllow sash. Placed in a classical landscape with a large column behind her to the left. Fox gloves and a red drape also seen on the left. British socialite Georgina, the Duchess of Devonshire, was also known as the 'Empress of Fashion' and the 'Beautiful Duchess'. Gainsborough's 1783 portrait from which this print is taken was painted for the sitter's mother, Georgina, Countess Spencer (1734-1814). The painting is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC (a Paul Mellon Bequest).
