Dream T Shirt

Allen Jones 1937

Summary

A collage of figures overlaid on a blue and green abstract shape on a bright yellow t-shirt. The t-shirt is on top of a red background. Allen Jones was a contemporary of David Hockney, R. B, Kitaj, Derek Boshier and Peter Phillips at the Royal College of Art but was expelled at the end of his first year in 1959. This print is related to his paintings of 1961-63 in which comic book elements were combined with collaged accumulations of men and women's clothing. Jones was interested in the early 1960s fashion for printed T shirts. Jones combines the likeness of French actress Brigitte Bardot with images of male and female figures taken from magazines and his original illustrations. The layering reflects the masculine and feminine sides of the human psyche. In 1964 Allen Jones moved to New York and became noted for his fetishistic images of women. From a portfolio of 24 screenprints by 24 artists commissioned by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and selected by the artist Richard Hamilton. Published in 1964 by the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, and printed at Kelpra Studio, London, in an edition of 40.
