Head of a Man
Summary
This portrait shows the head and shoulders of an anonymous man. The artist shows three-quarters of the man's face as a way to allow for greater representation of his facial features and expression than is possible in profile portraits. The man appears to be middle aged as he has receding hair and sideburns as well as lines around his eyes and mouth. The portrait seems rather solemn as the man is not smiling and appears to be lost in thought. He is wearing a hooded garment which is rendered through reduced linework in contrast to the delicate, fine rendering of the face which has soft modulations between light and dark.
