Summary

Lady Elizabeth Montagu (1743-1827) was the eldest daughter of Lady Mary Montagu and George Brudenell, the 4th Earl of Cardigan who assumed the name and arms of Montagu in 1749 and was created Duke of Montagu in 1776. Lady Elizabeth married Scottish nobleman Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleugh in 1767. He was Governor of the Royal Bank of Scotland from 1777 to 1812. Her title changed to Lady Elizabeth Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch, on her marriage. This is one of a series of 38 prints McArdell produced after paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds of which Reynolds remarked "By this man I shall be immortalised". Her third daughter is portrayed in the print 'Lady Caroline Montagu as Winter' 1920.365.
