Cluworth Hall, Tildesley

Cluworth Hall, Tildesley

Summary

A man and a woman in the foreground, dressed in country attire, seem to be chatting aimiably. Behind them, the main subject of the image, a dilapidated timber-framed building catches the light on two of its gable-ends, revealing decayed surfaces, with whole areas of plasterwork missing. A ruinous wall to the left indicates that outbuildings have crumbled away almost entirely. This was Cluworth, or Cleworth Hall, near Leigh in Lancashire, which had already been demolished (1805) by the time this print was produced (1823).
