Travelling West

Thomas Gainsborough 1727 - 1788

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Thomas Gainsborough. The sketch shows two figures on horseback from behind, drawn very loosely, travelling on a path. A few trees are on the right-hand side and in the distance, but otherwise the landscape is bare. Some clouds in the sky are indicated by loose brushmarks. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "15. THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH (b. 1727; d. 1788) TRAVELLING WEST Collection of Arthur Kay, Esq. Black chalk and washes of black, grey and grey-blue, with slight brownish tint on ground. 21 x 29.7 cm. (8 1/4 x 11 5/8 in.). Two travellers on horseback on a road over rising ground, seen against a sky of fading light: the figures indicated in a loose and summary way. The beauty of the luminous sky, and the sensitive gradation of the tones, are but inadequately suggested in the reproduction. L. B."
