Portrait of a Young Man
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Lucan van Leyden. The drawing shows a young man seated in front of a rounded window. The man is facing towards the right, looking slightly downwards with a serious expression. He is wearing an open jacket with a tie around his waist, and he has a cap on his head. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 19 LUCAS VAN LEYDEN (b. 1494; d. 1533) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN British Museum, 1892-8-4-12. (From the W. H. Barnard Collection.) Charcoal. 38.3 x 25.8 cm. (15 x 10 1/8 in.) The paper, stained brown, has been damaged and repaired in many places without serious detriment to the drawing itself. The signature and date, L 1513, are genuine; the inscription on the arch is illegible. The drawing was preserved till 1892, with none others by the same artist, in a black leather volume entitled LUCAS, TEEKENINGE 1637. The volume was bound for an unknown Dutch collector, who also possessed the Dürer drawings and MSS. afterwards acquired by Sir Hans Sloane, and a number of volumes, uniformly bound and dated, containing prints or drawings by Aldegrever, Amman, Bolten of Zwoll, Gerung, Stimmer, and other artists. C. DODGSON."
