Landscape with Pine Trees

Claude Lorrain 1604 - 1682

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a work by Claude. The image shows a landscape with trees in the foreground and hills and a ruin in the background. The ruin is positioned on the horizon towards the right edge of the composition. Although the subject is landscape the orientation of the paper is portrait. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 32 CLAUDE GELLÉE (b. 1600; d. 1682) LANDSCAPE WITH PINE TREES British Museum, O. o. 7-230. (From the Payne Knight Collection.) Brush drawing in bistre and Indian ink. 32 x 21.9 cm. (12 5/8 x 8 1/2 in.) A range of low hills, with a ruined tower on a nearer spur, seen from the skirts of a pine-wood. The opposition of warm distance and cool grey foreground is imperfectly brought out in the reproduction. The drawing shows in an unusual degree Claude's power of heightening a romantic mood by contrast with a touch of realism, such as the vivid suggestion of actual nature in the character of the pine stems. Signed 'Claudio fecit.' LAURENCE BINYON."
