Two Ships in Full Sail

Claude

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Claude. The drawing is of two large ships, both with sails billowing and flags flying. The features of the ships are drawn in detail, and the sepia wash provides areas of light and shade. There are three small rowing boats on the water in between the two ships. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "11. CLAUDE GELLEE (b. 1600; d. 1682) TWO SHIPS IN FULL SAIL Collection of Henry Oppenheimer, Esq. Pen and sepia and sepia wash. Signed Claudio fecit. 32 x 22.5 cm. (12 9/16 x 8 7/8 in.). A characteristic example of Claude's bold and effective handling of light and shade, evincing at the same time that intimate grasp of the 'anatomy' of a ship with which one is familiar from many a silhouetted vessel in his painted harbour subjects. Other studies of ships of a kindred character are to be found in the Louvre and the British Museum. T. B."
