Summary

Two thirds of the composition are taken up by a seated woman holding in her lap a letter held in her right hand, her left hand rests on a piece of furniture, she looks back over her right shoulder at a bird perched on the chair back. The right hand side of the sheet contains a study of a girl peeling fruit and a sketch of the piece of furniture in the main picture.
