Summary

Study showing the upper body of a crowned man on the right, wearing chains of office and an ermine robe. He looks down towards the left. On the far left half of a bishop's mitre is visible. Below, in the left bottom corner, is the upper half of a helmet, topped with a dragon.

25 Fragment of cartoon for Spirit of Justice 1844-5 Chalk on paper, mounted on canvas This is a fragment of the large cartoon that Brown sent in to the competition. The composition was identical to that of the watercolour study. The cartoon was 16 feet high and 9 feet wide, the actual size of the intended mural painting. The size is indicated on the wall. By the 1960s the cartoon had decayed and was divided into smaller pieces. This one shows the head of one of the Lords Temporal, visible on the right of the study. Manchester City Galleries
