Classical temple seen from the side. At the front one can see the architrave and two Corinthian columns and the side wall which remains almost intact. To the left of the temple only ruins are left. Water in the foreground. Background suggested.

Ba'albec, Lebanon 1839 Jonathan Hatfield 1793-1840 Pencil and watercolour on paper Jonathan Hatfield, the donor of the gallery’s first plaster casts, was a traveller and a sketcher. After he caught cholera, and two of his best friends died, he made a journey to the Holy Land. He went in September 1838 via Malta to Alexandria, the pyramids, Sinai, Jerusalem, Beirut and Ba’albec, returning to Italy in August 1839. Bequest of JB Willans 1957
