Edge of the Wood

Paul Nash, 1889 - 1946

Edge of the Wood

Paul Nash 1889 - 1946

Summary

Field in the midground seen through three trees in the foreground with tall slim trunks. Fence across midground follows the undulating levels of land. Variety of tree types. In the book 'The Landscape Vision of Paul Nash' by Roger Cardinal, p34, it is written "I would argue that with an image such as 'Edge of the Wood', the viewer is invited to peer out at sunlit spaces through a veil of foliage, and that woodland generally means sanctuary to Nash - to be under trees and in their shadows is to be enwrapped and protected".
