The Eiderdown
Sydney William Carline 1888 - 1929
Summary
This is an interior scene of a small, sunlit, attic bedroom, viewed from the foot of a single brass bed, in which a young woman lies asleep, beneath a thick, blue, flower-patterned eiderdown. Her red hat hangs at the end of the bedstead, and her red jacket hangs over a chair near the end of the bed. The white, stonewashed walls allow the artist to show interestingly coloured shadows on the walls and windowsills. Sidney Carline studied at the Slade School of Art in London during the period 1907 to 1910, and later in Paris. He was a member of the London Group from 1924.
