Two girls, one with a doll

Suzuki Harunobu about 1725 - about 1770

Summary

Domestic interior scene. Two girls, one on the left with a doll and one on the right tending a hibachi. In 1764 the full colour print was invented and Harunobu took advantage of this new technique. He focused on the subject of youth in daily life, whom he captured intently absorbed in an everyday activity, unconscious of the viewer. His aim was to present the transient scene of daily life in its own beauty and with all its inherent dignity.
