A Woodland Idyll

Derwent Lees 1885 - 1931

Summary

An impressionistic painting of two naked figures set in an idyllic woodland scene. A man with long white hair and beard is seated amongst the foliage to the left, one arm stretched out over the rock beside him, the other reaching across his body, lower down. Behind him to the right stands a woman with her arms raised to her chest. Tall trees and dark woodland are represented in the background behind them. There is dramatic moddling and daubs of paint used, especially in the foliage sections and the ground. Some unnatural colours are used on the ground such as sky blue, perhaps representing a pool of water.
