A Plan of Manchester and Salford
Summary
A large map of Manchester and Salford, in nine separate sections, which can be placed together to create one large map. The front page has an allegorical illustration of a goddess figure, possibly Charity, being handed coins which she is directing towards a labelled copy of the map, held by a cherubic child. The map acts as a funnel for the coins, presumably signifying that the map is directing money to him and his companions, who represent the arts. Either side of the child with the map and draughtman's compass is a child with a trumpet and lyre, and a child who draws on a paper. 'Charity' is flanked by two female attendants, perhaps Strength or Industry in a helmet, and perhaps Plenty with the cornucopia of coins. By 'Plenty' are items to signify the source of the money: there is a bee skep (no industrious bees visible), a shuttle, a bobbin, and two balls of thread. Behind the chidlren is a more literal drawing of a mill building with a smoking chimney. The whole illustration is framed by a gnarled and leafy tree and a rocky outcrop. The map shows aeriel views of fields and who they belong to as well as buildings and rivers.
