Town Hall, Manchester

Thomas Riley 1856 - 1892

Summary

View looking down Mount Street in Manchester towards Albert Square and the Town Hall, built in 1877 to a design by Alfred Waterhouse. The enormous gothic clocktower can be seen looming above office-type buildings (the time is 10.42). The scene is one of industrious city life, with parcels being unloaded from a flat cart to the right, men of business striding by, and people hurrying along carrying packages. The etched lines which form the picture are scratchy and lively, giving a feel of vibrating life - even the clouds bowl through the sky like hairy creatures scampering about their business.
