Summary

A three-quarter length, seated portrait of Charles Lawson (1728-1807). He faces right, but is looking forward. He is holding a book in his right hand, which is on his left knee. His left arm is resting on the arm of the chair. He wears a powdered wig and a tightly-buttoned coat. Charles Lawson ('Carolus Lawson') was the Headmaster of Manchester Grammar School from 1764-1807. The Collegiate Church (later Manchester Cathedral) can be seen through the window behind him, as can houses and a factory chimney.
