Summary

Full length portrait of young boy and woman. Boy is standing on wooden chair. He is wearing velvet tunic trimmed with horizontal stripes across the bodice, waist, and hem. He is wearing white socks and dark leather boots, his petticoat is visible and his straw hat is resting on the chair. The woman's right arm is resting on the child, whilst her left is holding a small bunch of flowers. Her hair is centre parted and worn in a large bun at the back of her head. Her bodice fastens at the centre front and has vertical trimmings on the front. The shoulder is trimmed with band of ruching. Her skirt is full and pleated and of a different material to her bodice, at the hem it is trimmed with three bands or tucks. The backdrop is a painted drape and window. Inscribed on reverse "William Bushell Shepands taken 1868 with his female (?) nurse". Domestic servant
