Summary
Full length studio portrait of young man in military outfit. He is wearing hat with chain strap, short single breasted jacket with upstanding collar. Jacket is trimmed around neck, epaulettes, centre front fastening and at bottom edge. Single chevron applied to each arm of jacket near cuff. His trousers are trimmed with double band of fabric running vertically down outside leg. He is wearing boots or shoes. Sash worn diagonally across torso. He is holding a pair of gloves in his right hand and he is resting his arm on upholstered kneeling stand. Plain studio backdrop with drape and chair to the left. Inscribed on reverse "c. 1880 / trooper / 17th Lancers / or 6th Dragoon / Guards / Undress". Man also shown in 2008.40.5.183.
