Summary

Full length studio portrait of woman against plain background. There is a curtain draped across the top right hand corner of the scene. The floor covering is faintly patterned and there is a skirting board. On the left hand side of the scene is a wooden chair which is painted white with a decorated oval back panel and an upholstered seat. The woman rests her right hand on the back of the chair. The woman's hair is arranged in a centre parting and worn away from her face in a chignon at the nape of her neck. She wears a hair ribbon and earrings. She is wearing a white blouse with a collar beneath a mid-coloured silk dress and wide sleeved paletot. The paletot is decorated with rows of small ruffles at the edge of the cuffs, the hem and on either side of the buttoned front fastening. Beneath the paletot the dress has a full skirt and a crinoline. The woman is holding a pale coloured hat trimmed with a patterned scarf.
