Peace about 1910 Thomas Edwin Mostyn 1864-1930 Oil on canvas Mostyn uses landscape to convey the feeling of thinking about death, or of lost loved ones. A monolith beneath the trees might be a memorial. Born in Liverpool, Mostyn moved to Manchester to design cotton goods labels. Then, after a spell at Victorian artist Hubert von Herkomer’s art school in Bushey, Hertfordshire, Mostyn returned to Manchester to paint portraits and set up his own art school in Chorlton-cum-Hardy. In later life he painted imaginative landscapes like Peace, producing his best work as his eyesight began to fail. Purchased 1911.51
