The Harbour

Derek Wilkinson 1929 - 2001

Summary

View across a calm harbour, looking towards a whitewashed seaside town. The harbour walls curve round from either side of the painting to meet at an opening in the centre foreground. A large fishing boat returing from sea, approaches the entrance with thick black smoke pouring from its chimney; at its left side, two figures in a small boat leave the harbour and go out to sea on the choppy water. In the background, whitewashed cottages and a number of parked cars line the seafront with a hotel to the left. The setting sun in the distance meets dark stormy clouds across the scene.
