Mrs Margaret Ainslie

George Romney 26 Dec 1734 - 15 Nov 1802

Summary

Portrait of a young woman in eighteenth century dress and wrap. Her dress is a pale blue silk, low cut, with a lace trim, and her wraps are pale pink and white, also with lace. She stands facing the left, with her head turned towards the viewer, her right arm securing her wrap against her breast, and her left resting straight down against her hip. Her gaze and her complexion are both very clear. Her hair is discreetly dressed with a few dark pearls and a small blue flower. The background is indistinct to the right, with dark shapes suggesting trees, and clearer to the left, with leaves and sky above a mountain. It represents a generic view of the English Lake District, where Mrs Ainslie’s family lived.
