On the Shore at Scheveling - Low Water

Edward William Cooke 1811 - 1880

Summary

Seascape depicting low tide on the shore of Scheveling in the Netherlands. A large sailing boat with a Dutch flag is moored in the foreground, waves lapping around it. Further out to sea, more sailing boats are visible in the background, sails billowing in the wind. In the foreground, a man carries a basket on his shoulders as he walks towards the large boat; a small dog runs at his side. To the right of the composition, a number of figures carry baskets from the boat and unload on the shore. The tips of anchors are visible on the sands of the shore, which are covered in pools of water from the tide. The sky is covered with grey and white clouds.
