evening dress

Elsa Schiaparelli 1890 - 1973

Summary

Full length evening gown in black satin-backed textured silk-crepe; high halter neck to one side; low back with self fabric covered buttons below; skirt with short pointed train to the back; woven inner side label 'Schiaparelli, 4 Rue de la Paix, Paris'. Cleverly cut and seemingly simple black bias-cut evening dresses were a staple of Schiaparelli's house, designed to be worn with highly embellished jackets and chic hats. This dress reputedly belonged to Madame Agnes, the hat designer, who wore exclusively black, and primarily creations by Vionnet and Schiaparelli.. Schiaparelli operated from 4 Rue de la Paix from 1928 to 1935.
