evening dress & coat

Pierre Cardin, Paris 1922

Summary

Evening ensemble comprising sleeveless silk crepe full-length dress, fully decorated with pale and transparent pailettes and with the hem pooling onto the floor; Spectacular floor-length coat formed of sandwiched iridescent white crin, swirling around the figure in a modern design reminscent of coral or sea-life. This outfit presents a continuation of Cardin's 1960s futurism and illustrates his continued flirtation with modernism. Cardin was born in 1922 and founded his own house in Paris in 1950 after working for Paquin, Schiaparelli and Dior, and in 1953 he began with haute couture. He was especially influential during the 1960s with space age mod fashion, the mini dresses and new fabrics like PVC. He continued with haute couture well into the 1990s but from 1994 (the date of this dress) he showed his collections only to a small selection of clients and journalists.
