Summary

Public: Tea cup and saucer, soft paste porcelain, painted underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze with pink, turquoise, green and iron red enamels and gilt in 'Japan' style pattern. Private: Wide conical tea cup, straight sides tapering to curved base on small splayed foot. Angular loop handle with moulded leaf motif on top. Sides decorated with ornate Imari style decoration in three wide panels separated by tooth-shaped underglaze blue panels covered with gilt diaper. In each blue panel two circular reserves filled with iron red and gilt dots. Wide panels in between filled with elaborate patterns comprising stylised flowers, zigzagging fence, blue rock, small birds and large patches of iron red with gilt scrolls. Border round base of gilt scrolls and gilt and red dots. Gilt edging to rim of cup and footring, gilt handle. Saucer with straight sloping sides curving slightly, narrow footring. Upper surface decorated with same pattern of three ornate panels decorated with flowers, birds, zigzag fence, blue rock and patches of iron red, separated by tooth-shaped blue and gilt panels. Central well decorated with plain white panel surrounded by gilt and blue lines containing border of gilt scrolls and gilt and red dots. Gilt rim to saucer.
