Dr Charles White
Summary
A three-quarter right side profile portrait of Dr Charles White (1728-1813), an eminent Manchester surgeon who was largely responsible for founding the Manchester Royal Infirmary and St Mary's Hospital. He is dressed in a black jacket with a white necktie, and looks out of the painting with one eyebrow raised. There is dark drapery in the background, behind which two surgical glass jars are visible on the right hand side. For the print after this painting of Dr Charles White by William Ward, see 1920.243.
