Summary

Rural landscape scene depicting barges on the River Yare in Norfolk. Two loaded barges sail along the river side by side, each with a single sail up. The river bank extends to the right with cows grazing at the water's edge in the foreground. There is a small wooden bridge to the right on which a single figure stands watching the boats. There are overhanging trees to the right, the work is executed in naturalistic colours.

Barges on the Yare: Sunset probably 1830s James Stark 1794 – 1859 James Stark was a Norfolk painter, who was well-known for his river views. This scene of rural trade at sunset displays Stark’s characteristic fresh colours. The willow trees and cattle show his other trait: they are very like those by Dutch painters of the 1600s.
